Power BI: The perfect addition to Jira

TSM Treuhand GmbH fulfils various public and private law mandates in the agricultural and food sector. TSM stands for trust, statistics and management. TSM’s main activity is the management of the dbmilch.ch database. It also carries out other assignments in the areas of fiduciary services, fund management, statistics and export controls. TSM’s main client is the Federal Office for Agriculture (FOAG).
Sparke Consulting has been partnering with TSM Treuhand for more than year now and has been supporting the local team in many of its data-focused endeavors, mostly surrounding statistics and building on data from Jira inside of Power BI.

Challenges
TSM uses Jira to plan and monitor development work with external partners. It is important to be able to keep an eye on the current workload, the current status of various work packages and the monthly monitoring of developments. Despite Jira Premium, the built-in reporting function of Jira was not sufficient to fulfil the more complex reporting requirements.
Solution
Power BI was used as a complementary element to Jira. Thanks to an easy-to-set-up connector, the data was processed into a semantic model in Power BI and measures and visualizations were built on it. The model is also prepared for quick ad-hoc analyses for self-service and thus serves as a central hub for analysis.
In addition to other source systems, this makes it possible to set up holistic controlling.
Result
TSM Treuhand relies on a data model in Power BI for planning and monitoring developments, which is updated daily with data and thus provides timely and accurate information for status meetings, executive decisions and other reports.
Together with Sparke Consulting, the data model is constantly adapted and linked to further source systems.
The result is cross-system controlling in Power BI that goes far beyond the capabilities of Jira.
